It depends - most probably you are not covered by your UK auto insurance for car rental in USA. BUT, your credit card may offer car rental insurance for your travel. Check with the credit card issuing bank, if it includes this insurance. Even if your credit card has this bonus, make sure to use the card to pay for your car rental, as usually it is one of the insurance conditions (otherwise the insurance is not valid - if you use other means for payment).
If you have special car rental insurance, which may be also part of your travel insurance (some insurance companies offer this service), then check with your insurance company for exact details, as some offers are not valid in USA.
