If I may judge from my experience of last two months, renting a car from Avis 4 times during this period, Avis is the most average, no-thrills and boring car rental company you'll ever encounter. Not as good as Hertz and also less expensive, rarely the cheapest if you choose from at least 3-4 different auto rentals, trying not hard enough to be persuasive in its seriousness of keeping you as a valued customer. Their treatment of corporate clients is better than that of leisure renters, although not as good as National's. I had no real issue with Avis, except for lack of choice when choosing a car. Go for it if they are cheapest, otherwise try another company.
