Car Rental Fees
Car Rental Fees
There are several types of fees in the car hire business. Here is the list of the most important ones:
Deposit (refundable) - deposit is unavoidable and only rarely accepted in cash. Most car hires require major credit cards. In some countries (notably in UK) it is not uncommon to charge your credit card the whole deductible.
Airport Surcharge - sometimes consists of several fees like airport security, local airport taxes etc.
Drop-off Fee - most car rental companies will charge you for dropping the vehicle in other location than picking it up.
Fuel Charge - it is important to check the car hire policies regarding fuel. In certain cases you can end up paying twice for the fuel.
Extra Mileage - Most car rentals today offer unlimited mileage. There are certain areas where you will hardly find any cars rental offering this service and you should check well the cost of such policies.
Additional Driver Fee - some car hires offer free additional driver. Other car rentals won't charge for additional driver if your spouse. Still other car rental agencies will charge for additional driver even if your wife/husband.
Young Driver Fee - Often charged to drivers under 25.
Sales Tax - charged in United States, depends on the state of your car rental company.
Value Added Tax (VAT) - similar to Sales Tax in US, this can be refunded in some countries. Ask about refund options in your cars rental branch.
Late Fee - Car hire companies usually calculate the daily rent starting from the hour you rented the car. If you for instance pick up your car at 11AM, you are supposed to drop it off until 11AM the given day. There is usually a grace period of up to 2-3 hours, then you are charged Late Fee. Check your car rental agreement for Late Fee as you can actually pay whole another day of renting.
