As a rule, most US car rental companies will require a major credit card for the deposit with only some car hires compromising on a debit cards. As credit cards are not widespread in Europe, European car hire companies accept debit cards. American Express (AmEx) cards are often not accepted in many countries. Certain car hire companies accept debit cards with a credit check.
Paying the deposit by cash is very uncommon and possible only in special cases - usually at small local car rentals, often at closed vacation resorts or islands.
IMPORTANT: Please notice that some international car rental companies will block the full value of the rented vehicle on your credit card. If you want to make business with such company at all (you may have little choice at certain destinations) you may need to have another credit/debit card in order not to exceed your credit limit.
