Driving and Speed Limits in Kiev
Imagine a traffic jam with thousands of cars virtually stuck in place and not moving for over 45 minutes. A man gets off his vehicle and approaches the pizza-delivery van in front of him. After some phone calls, the pizza-man admits he is unable to deliver his goods on time and sells the pizza to the driver. This is a real story from Kiev - this reviewer was stuck in that congestion.
Driving in Kiev probably won't be your most beautiful experience in Ukraine (unless you are a masochist or professional adventurer) but surely an unforgetable one.
First, get prepared for some very serious traffic jams. Most drivers are arogant and some are drunk. Driving with seat belts is unheard of. Driving in opposite lane isn't. 95% of all guideboards are in cyrillic only, if that helps.
If you rent a car at Kiev airport and drive it to the city center you will be surprised by the excellent motorway (4 lanes in every direction). The bad news is it only leads to closest Kiev suburb and is the only highway in the country.
