Driving and Speed Limits in Madrid

Given its central location in Spain, Madrid is an important traffic hub that many drivers traveling between other locations have to cross.

This obviously makes the proverbial Madrid's traffic jams only worse. One should be aware of several possibilities to drive in Madrid. First of all, use the ring roads. This is the best way to find the place you are looking for and avoiding the maze of streets that is central Old Madrid. Second, use the toll roads. Yes, it is more expensive but you will avoid the most serious traffic congestions that would definitely spoil your holidays. The toll roads are marked with letter R as opposite to regular roads that go with letter A and carry much heavier traffic. Third, do not entirely trust your GPS navigation to avoid frustration: roads in Madrid are often closed for reconstruction and maintenance. Have a look on the map before you drive.

Parking is often a problem in central Madrid and even Pay & Display zones tend to be full.

Be careful with the Spanish sun. Use the windshield sunshades wherever possible during parking and never leave your children in the car - the intense sunlight could cause them serious damage, even death.
