As in other European countries, basic insurance including third party liability and fire damage is mandatory in France and included in the rental price.
Some car rental agencies in France do include also CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and occasionally also theft protection. When renting a car in France it is always good to inquire what kind of insurance is already included as the CDW can be as costly as $80/day.
The price of CDW depends mostly on deductible damage excess, or the maximum sum of money you will pay in case of an accident or car theft.
Check your credit card or other travel insurance policy - if your insurance doesn't cover Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) you can buy it for around $10/day.
