Car rental insurance in Italy is costly: the basic rates include the obligatory third party and fire liability but Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and car theft insurances are also mandatory.
This system makes Italian car rental companies exceptionaly costly (provided you are not planning to buy CDW and theft insurance) comparing to other countries and some tourists prefer to rent a car in another European country and only then travel to Italy.
CDW and theft protection deductibles are up to $1,200 each.
Despite the high price it is advisable to be covered by both CDW and theft insurance (which you can avoid when renting in another country), especially in southern Italy with high rates of car theft and negligable driving. For the same reason consider the Personal Effects Protection (insurance covering stolen personal items) and Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) that will cost up to $10/day each.
It is advisable not to leave your personal belongings in the rented car in Italy.
