Hi, Spain and Portugal are members of European Union and they are in Schengen borderless zone, it means, that it should not be a problem to go from Madrid to Portugal and return to Madrid. You have to check the particular car hire agency policy, but as far as I know it should be possible. Make sure you inform the car rental company about this - that you want to go with your car rental from Madrid to Portugal.
