I checked several companies before renting a one-way LA to SF car rental. Most of large rent-a-cars either do not allow the one-way rentals, at least between these cities or have ridiculously high drop-off fees. It came as a surprise to me as LA-SF seems such obvious combination for open-jaw tickets. Anyway, National had both a reasonable rate and the car we needed (there were 6 of us) and our experience was most pleasant. The car was not a new one but still acceptable - we were only sorry that we didn't rent a GPS navigation as well (although it's been offered to us along with other extras, mostly insurance that I declined as well). By the way, it took us 7 and 1/2 hours including two short breaks to get to SF, with about 1/2 hour lost in LA when I took a wrong exit.
