one way NY to AZ or CA

Hi, 

I am planning a trip from New York to either Tucson/Phoenix or Orange County, CA, this will be a one way trip.  Lets say I will need the car for 1 month altogether in NY and across the country.  What is the most economical way to do this?  Any company recomendations.

I heard some car rental companies do not allow you to drive in Downtown Manhattan. Do you know which company doesn’t have problem with this? Thank you.

Most New York car rentals have some special policies on Downtown Manhattan. It often makes difference if you are of certain age, renting for a specific time etc. You really have to check with your rent-a-car and ask for more information…

New York car rental - winter

Would you recommend renting a SUV/4x4 vehicle when visiting New York. I’m from South and never drove in snow before. We plan to stay in December. Thank you.

Well, that depends on where you are planning to drive. For New York City any car will probably do but if you want to see the countryside, you may indeed consider 4x4 car rental during the Winter months.

renting car in New York and going to Canada - is it possible?

I would like to rent a car in New York City and visit Montreal, Canada and come back, for a total of one week. Would most rental companies allow that, and will I need to obtain an international license to drive to Canada?

it depends on several factors:

- if you are not Canadian, then you can rent a car in New York and you can go to Canada as tourist in your rented car - if the car rental company policy permits this - and many car rental companies do permit to travel with your car rental to Canada.

- if you are Canadian, then you can not rent a car in New York, USA and use it in Canada, as it is against the Canadian law - you have to ask the Canadian custom clerks at the border for special permit and you must change your US rented car within 24 hours for local rental (e.g. you rented car in New York from Hertz car rental - you have to change the car in Canada for car supplied by Hertz Canada branch).

- driving license -

- if you are US citizen with US driving license, then your license should be enough to drive in Canada as tourist (together with your passport - to cross the border) - I would suggest anyway to have International driving license (IDP - International Driving Permit), even for Canada. For actual info check with the Canadian embassy. If you have your own US car insurance policy (lt's say from New York) which covers car rental in USA - this should be also valid in Canada for your tourist car rental - check with your auto insurance company, if your policy covers this.

- if you are not US citizen or permanent resident with US driving license, then I would strongly suggest to have International driving license for driving car in New York and also in Canada - as far as I know you are required by law to have International driving license in New York, USA and Canada (together with your original driving license issued by your country).
