The basic car rental insurance in Spain includes third person liability and fire damage. This insurance is included in the daily rental price and is obligatory in Spain. Other liabilities must be covered by additional insurance, usually some kind of Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Super CDW (the same but upgraded to lower deductibles). This can include various other coverages that should be always specified in the rental or insurance agreement.
CDW is very expensive in Spain considering how low can the rental rates get. In fact, CDW can be more expensive than the rental itself, typically between $20 and $50/day.
Theft protection will cost approximately $4-$10/day and is charged in addition to CDW.
In some cases, your credit/debit card insurance can cover the damage incured in Spain. Make sure you understand the insurance provided by the payment card company and don't pay unnecessary CDW.
