Car Rental FAQ
What insurance cover do I need when renting car in USA?
It's good to have at least the following insurance/cover for your car rental in USA:
LDW - Loss damage waiver (in Europe known as CDW - Collision Damage Waiver) - this usually covers damages to the vehicle caused by car accidents/collisions, vandalism and theft. Some car rental companies offer this cover with deductable/excess - e.g. if excess is $500, then you are responsible for any damage or loss up to $500. It's usually possible to buy LDW with zero excess. As always, there are some exceptions - it's important to read the LDW conditions and also the fine print. Damage to Tyres, Keys and windshield are usually not included in this cover - it can be purchased as extra. LDW should be included in your New York car rental quote/price, as it mandatory cover by NY law.
CDW - Collision Damage Waiver (similar to LDW, but usually is not that comprehensive as LDW)
TF - Theft protection - insurance against car theft (usually included in LDW)
LI - Liability Insurance - cover you for public liability injury to other persons
IMPORTANT:
each car rental company and each insurance company has own policies and conditions, it's important to read them in full, incl. the fine print and to understand what you sign.
